Hype - Original

1,395.00

24" x 30" (60.96cm x 76.20cm)

acrylic, magazine images, ink on canvas, framed

“Hype” is a direct manifestation of my palatable angst regarding advertising and its perpetuation of the myth that “you are not enough as you are”.

These seemingly innocuous snippets of text came from just two magazines published for a female audience and tell us what we need, how to live, and who we “should be.” Rather than building us up as the publishers would have you believe, they are actually tearing us down.

This kind of hype creates struggles of inadequacy for most women, including myself; we face these damaging messages on a daily basis from every media outlet and, by extension, every other person we come in contact with.

The need to create this piece was two-fold: first as an outlet of my personal frustration and a sharing of my story; and second as a reminder to us all that advertising is not truth, is it just hype.

*Published in Incite 2, Color Passions: The Best of Mixed Media, October 2014

*Featured in #seemetakeover, Times Square, NY, July 2014
